Listening … On-device

An illustration of the three moves, not a recording. What you actually get depends on your voice, your microphone and the app you are writing in.

Every app

It works where you already work.

Nothing to install app by app. No separate window to dictate into and copy out of. VaniQ writes into the text field you are focused on, the same way your keyboard does — so the list below is really just a list of places you already put your cursor.

  • Mail
  • Messages
  • Notes
  • Safari
  • Chrome
  • Slack
  • ChatGPT
  • Claude
  • Notion
  • Word
  • Cursor
  • Terminal

…and every other app on your Mac with a text field in it.

Password fields, and the few apps that deliberately block automated input, are the exception. VaniQ is not affiliated with any of the apps above — they are simply places it types.

How it works

Hold. Speak. Let go.

Three moves, and then it is out of your way. Nothing to open, nothing to copy, nothing to paste.

Step one

Put your cursor anywhere.

An email, a message, a note, a search box, a prompt. If you can type there, you can talk there.

fn
Step two

Hold your key and talk.

Speak the way you would to a person — full sentences, second thoughts and all. Fn by default, or pick your own shortcut.

Can we move Thursday to the…
Step three

Let go. It’s there.

Your words appear at the cursor, punctuated. VaniQ never presses Return — reading it and sending it stay yours.

The details

It writes what you meant.

People pause, restart and use names no dictionary has heard of. VaniQ sorts that out on your Mac, before a single word is typed.

Heard So, um, I think, uh, we should go with the second option.

Typed So, I think we should go with the second option.

Hesitations

The ums don’t make it in.

Think out loud. The ums and uhs — and a word you said twice around one — are taken out before anything reaches the page.

Heard Send the contract to Retambra at Coherent Lab.

Typed Send the contract to Ritambhra at Coheron Lab.

Your words

Names spelled your way.

Add the names you use — colleagues, clients, products, medicines — and VaniQ writes your spelling when it hears one. Everyday words are left exactly as you said them.

First We can ship on Friday,

Then And send the notes after.

Typed We can ship on Friday, and send the notes after.

Pauses

Talk in pieces. It reads as one.

Say a sentence, stop to think, say the next. VaniQ puts the space and the right capital where they belong, so the second part carries on from the first.

AirPods Still in high quality for your music

Listening Through your Mac’s own microphone

Microphone

AirPods keep sounding like AirPods.

A headset microphone drops AirPods to phone-call quality. With them in and your MacBook open, VaniQ listens through the Mac instead — clearer for the speech model, and your music stays as it was. Any other microphone is one menu away.

Your day

You write shorter than you think.

Not because the thought is small — because typing is the slow part. Here is the same reply to the same message, once typed and once spoken.

Typed

Can we move Thursday?

Four words. Sam still has to ask why, and when.

Spoken

Can we move Thursday to the afternoon? The morning slot clashes with the design review, and I’d rather give this one the whole hour than rush it.

Twenty-seven words. Nothing left to follow up on.

  • The reply you keep putting off

Say the whole email while it is still in your head, read it back, then send it. The one you were dreading takes about as long as reading it did.

  • The note before it’s gone

The thing to remember before the call, written while you are still walking to it. No app to open, no thought lost on the way.

  • The prompt that gets a real answer

AI gives back what you put in. Say the full background instead of trimming the question down to what your hands can face.

Speed

It keeps up with you.

The gap between letting go of the key and seeing your words is the whole experience. Here is ours, measured rather than claimed.

186ms

Median time from releasing the key to your text appearing in a real app, measured on version 0.2.3. Since 0.2.4 VaniQ also waits for the sound still arriving as you let go — about 50 ms more — so the end of your last word is kept.

Typical dictation (median of 50)

186 ms

Slowest 5% of those dictations

252 ms
43 MBMemory while it sits in your menu bar
0.22%CPU while idle, over a 60-second sample
0 bytesOf your audio sent anywhere for transcription

Measured with the benchmark tool in our own repository on an Apple M1 with 8 GB of memory, including the receiving app’s own paste handling. These are development measurements on small test sets, not a guarantee — your Mac, microphone and apps will differ.

Your voice never leaves your Mac.

Speech recognition runs on the Apple Neural Engine in your own machine. VaniQ does not upload your audio or your transcripts to a transcription service — not ours, not anyone’s.

Offline once it’s set up

One 450 MB speech model downloads the first time you launch VaniQ. After that, dictation itself works with the Wi-Fi off.

Nothing collected to train on

No audio and no transcripts are sent to us for training. Your usage totals are counted on your Mac and stay there.

Permissions you can read

Microphone, so it can hear you. Accessibility, so your shortcut works and text can be placed in other apps. Asked for when they are needed, not all at once on day one.

Your internet connection is used for the first download, for your account and payment, and for a periodic subscription check. A paid subscription keeps working for 14 days offline after a check falls due. Read the privacy policy.

One more thing, if you write code

Say the name. Keep the spelling.

Every other dictation tool has to guess at the names in your project, because it has never seen them. VaniQ reads the one you have open, so the words you say come out spelled the way your code spells them.

You say

“refactor the auth middleware to use the new token store”

VaniQ types

refactor the authMiddleware to use the new TokenStore

Works in supported editors and terminals when VaniQ can tell which project you are in. In our own test set this took correctly spelled identifiers from 2 out of 22 to 21 out of 22. Everyday dictation needs no project at all.

Good questions

Before you download.

Will it run on my Mac?

You need macOS 14 Sonoma or later on an Apple silicon Mac — an M1 or anything newer. Dictation is English-only for now. Intel Macs, Windows, iPhone and Android are not supported. The first launch downloads a speech model of about 450 MB.

How does the free trial work?

Sign in with Google and the download starts. VaniQ works fully for seven days — every app, no limits — and you never enter a card to start. When the week ends, dictation pauses until you choose a plan: $9.99 a month or $99 a year. Decide early and you lose nothing: subscribe during the week and the first charge lands when your free week would have ended anyway.

My Mac already has dictation. Why this?

Differences you will feel on the first day: you hold one key instead of turning a mode on and off; the text lands in the app you are already in rather than in a window you then copy from; the ums and uhs are taken out; and the names you add to Your words come out spelled your way. If you write code, VaniQ also spells the names in your project correctly. The honest test is your own week of writing, which is what the trial is for.

Does it work offline?

Dictation does, once the speech model has downloaded. Your account and the periodic subscription check need a connection; a paid subscription keeps working for 14 days offline after one falls due, so a flight or a bad hotel connection is not a problem.

Can it type into any app?

Nearly. VaniQ writes into the focused text field in apps like Mail, Messages, Notes, Slack, browsers, editors and terminals. Password fields and a small number of apps that deliberately block automated input will not accept it. Try your own apps during the trial — and note that VaniQ never presses Return, so nothing sends itself.

Does it work with AirPods?

Yes, and it treats them kindly. A Bluetooth headset microphone switches AirPods into phone-call mode, which makes music sound flat and gives the speech model a thin signal. So when your AirPods are connected and your MacBook is open, VaniQ listens through the Mac’s own microphone instead. If you would rather use the AirPods’ microphone, or any other, choose it from the Microphone menu.

How accurate is it, really?

Accuracy depends on your voice, your microphone, the noise around you and the words you use, so read anything important before you send it. On our own 20-recording test set an M1 scored 0.00% word error on ordinary prose, and 1.77% overall once project vocabulary was matching — 5.96% without it, because most of those errors are technical names. That corpus is clean studio audio, so it flatters the number. It is a measurement of our test set, not a promise about your voice.

Will it get names right?

Common ones, usually. Unusual ones — a colleague, a client, a company, a medicine — the speech model can only spell by ear. Add them to Your words, in the menu bar, and VaniQ writes your spelling whenever it hears something close. On our test sentences that restored five of eight names the model had misspelled and changed nothing else. A name heard too far from its spelling can still slip through, so read important names back before you send.

What happens to what I say?

It is transcribed on your Mac and put where your cursor is. The audio is not uploaded, the transcript is not uploaded, and neither is used to train anything. Your usage totals are kept on your machine.

How do I cancel, or move to a new Mac?

Both from your account page. Your subscription is not tied to one machine — sign in on any Mac you own and it works, and the account page lists the ones you have used so you can tidy it up. Cancelling stops future renewals; you keep access until the end of the period you already paid for.
